The Japanese symbol ensō evokes the concept of Śūnyatā, or “voidness.” The circle is defined by the emptiness within, just as all things are defined by their lack of inherent reality. Every object we encounter is a process that extends forward and backward in time. When you look at your mother, you’re also seeing the clouds that made the water that nourished the fruit she had for breakfast. You’re seeing the series of decisions that led her own parents together. You’re seeing one moment in a web of causation. Each moment dies as it gives rise to the next. Every apparent object is merely a temporary pattern arising from the interactions of countless contingencies. This is why the Heart Sutra teaches: “Form Does not Differ From the Void, And the Void Does Not Differ From Form.  Form is Void and Void is Form; The Same is True For Feelings,Perceptions, Volitions and Consciousness.”
